Lawrence: John & Verlie

John R. Lawrence was born November 17, 1892 at Seawell, Manitoba, the second son of John and Margaret Lawrence. He had two brothers: James and William and five sisters: Elizabeth (McCurdy) Shea, Margaret (Mrs. Tom Hanton), Ida (Mrs. Dan Peckover), Gertie (Mrs. Amos Blenkhorne) and Bella (Mrs. Alex Fraser)

In 1904, the family moved to a homestead, which had been filed earlier, west of Browning. Later the parents returned to Inglow, Manitoba. John and James remained on the homestead.

In 1904, John enlisted with the 1st. Canadian Pioneers, trained at Camp Hughes, Manitoba, went overseas with the 1st Canadian Expeditionary Force, served in the Canadian Railway Troop for thirty-four months, joined the 79th Camerons, and saw action at Ypres, Mons, Passchendaele and Vimy Ridge.

After his discharge in February, 1919 he returned to Browning and farmed the SE 6-6-4 until October, 1923 when he bought the general store in Browning.

On October 15, 1923, John and I, Verlie Uldine McCurdy, were married in the United Church Manse in Lampman. We made our home in Browning and John carried on the store business with a full line of groceries and hardware. He also had the Imperial Oil Bulk Station and was payee for both the Searle and Pool elevators.

John served as councillor for the R.M. of Browning from 1942 to 1957. He was on the Lampman Hospital Board and the Souris Valley Nursing Home Board.

He was appointed postmaster in 1926 and carried on until 1957, when due to a stroke he was no longer able to. I carried on as acting postmaster until 1960, when I was appointed postmaster. In 1966, I resigned, having completed forty years in the postal service.

After John's stroke he was a resident of Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg from 1957 until he passed away on October 8, 1967

John and I had two sons: John Albert born November 24, 1924, passed away November 25, 1924 and Kenneth Earl, born October 29, 1926.

After John's death I continued to live in our home in Browning. I had closed the store. On January 25, 1975 I married Jack Eaton of Willmar. We were married in the Wascana United Church manse in Regina.

We lived for a few months on Jack's farm and in June we spent a few weeks in England. On our return we made our home at Kenosee Lake, where we spent our summers. Our winters were spent in Pheonix, Arizona. After five happy years I was once again left alone when Jack passed away suddenly at our home on October 20, 1979. I continued to live in our home at Kenosee Lake until I retired to make my home at Prairie Place in Lampman in November, 1981
