The Lawrence Family
John Lawrence was born at Wins Hill, Aberdeen, Scotland, on February 8, 1863. He arrived by boat in Canada at the age of 19 in 1882. He took a homestead in Inglow (which was Woodlea then) in 1883, NW 34-11-16. The patent was issued December 17, 1886. He married Margaret Hume (born in Scotland, September 7, 1862) (whose family had come from Scotland) on November 26, 1886. John lived in a shack, but a house was built where a family of eight children were born, Elizabeth (September 19, 1887), James (September 13, 1890), John R.(November 17, 1892), William (December 2, 1894), Margaret (February 22, 1897), Ida (Peckover) (August 17, 1899), Gertie (Blenkhorne) (September 5, 1901) and Bella(Fraser) (November 29, 1904).
As the family grew, a big kitchen was added. It was very hard work as there weren't any conveniences in those days. Many the good times were had at home with dances in the kitchen. Mrs. Margaret Lawrence was a great manager, and in younger days, acted as mid-wife bringing many young children into the world.
Besides his Homestead in Inglow a homestead was taken at Browning, Saskatchewan (Weir Hill). This was taken in 1902, S.E. 36-5-6 W2. John Lawrence was great for trying to keep kids at school, was very fond of sports and reading. As there were no schools out there and Saskatchewan wasn't a province, he moved back to Inglow in 1907. Then in the summers, Jim and Bill went back and put the crop in. The horses would be shipped by rail in the spring and brought back in the fall.
Jim attended Agricultural School and received his diploma in 1911. Jim married Maude McGoven, they had no children. Jim passed away March 31, 1973. Maud passed away in 1961.
Jim and Bill stayed out there to farm and got into the cattle business. When the first world war started John enlisted in 1914. Bill came back from Saskatchewan and worked at home.

Lawrence: John and Margaret
John Lawrence was born at Wins Hill, Aberdeen, Scotland on February 8, 1863. His wife Margaret Hume was also born in Scotland, September 7, 1862.
John Lawrence arrived by boat at Halifax, then traveled on to Winnipeg. The year was 1882 and he was nineteen years old. He worked at various jobs, then took out a homestead at Inglow, Manitoba, in 1883, the patent was issued December 17, 1886.
John and Margaret were married November 26, 1886. To this union were eight children: ELIZABETH, September 19, 1887; JAMES, September 13, 1890; JOHN R., November 17, 1892; WILLIAM, December 2, 1894; MARGARET, February 22, 1897; IDA, August 17, 1899, GERTIE, September 5, 1901; BELLA, November 26, 1904.
In the year 1902 a person could have a homestead in Manitoba and one in Saskatchewan. John came to Saskatchewan in July, 1902 and filed on the SE 1/4 36-5-6-W2. He received the patent on August 28, 1907.
In the year 1904, John moved his family up to what was to become the Province of Saskatchewan in 1905.
The four room house was built in March 1904, at a cost of $200. Seventy-five years later the original house is still being lived in, though it has gone through some changes in its lifetime.
In 1903 there were 98 acres broken; in 1906 there were seven acres broken and 150 acres sown. They had ten horses, twenty head of cattle, ducks and chickens, two stables and one grainery. The first year, 1902, farming was done by oxen.
In 1907, John moved his family back to Manitoba; with the exception of Elizabeth, James and John.
